Fresh eating is discouraged as the berries can be toxic in large amounts. Elderberry also serves as a haven for birds and a food source for an assortment of pollinators. The berries are larger than the American varieties and ‘Marge’ is also self-pollinating but yield will be increased with other European elderberry plants nearby. Marge fruits on second year wood.
