All About Adaptogens

Posted by Lily Kunning on

What the heck is an adaptogen?! This is an herbal action that everyone should know about! An adaptogen is a natural substance considered to help the body adapt to stress (and we all have stress!). A well-known example is Ginseng, but there are dozens- all having different effect in the body.

In order to qualify as an adaptogen, the plant or fungi must:
1. Be non-toxic to the recipient
2. Creates a non-specific response in the body (this is why science will not verify the health benefits from adaptogens- they cannot identify or quantify within the systems of the body, even with a ton of effect data done on humans)
3. It increases the power of resistance against multiple stressors including physical, chemical, and biological agents.
4. It has a normalizing influence on physiology, irrespective of the direction of change from physiological norms caused by the stressor. (Meaning, whether your systems are doing too much or too little adaptogens help balance and normalize.)

We at Haven Herbs love adaptogens, take them on the regular, add them into formulas, and as an herbalist with a private practice, I put them in a heck of a lot of formulas for my clients.
