Shortages, price increases, tariffs, and other late-stage capitalist woes

Shortages, price increases, tariffs, and other late-stage capitalist woes

We wanted to address some of the things you may have noticed across the board in your shopping experiences (and how we are addressing issues here at Haven).

As you may have noticed, there are shortages for all kinds of items.

Some are caused by labor shortages:
We have lost millions to a pandemic. People are refusing to work for less than a living wage across the world. This last reason causes short term pains for some, but is overall a good thing.

Some are caused by transit issues:
Ports are glutted (and International transit routes closed) and we are not getting supplies to their final destinations nearly as fast anymore. Truck drivers are refusing to be exploited by their corporate bosses anymore, either. (And again, labor refusing to be exploited causes short term pains, but is overall a good thing.)

Some are caused by actual materials shortages:
Many natural items- food as well as ingredients for our formulas, for example, are in shorter supply due to climate change impacts.

News stories are circulating about gas prices, inflation in general, and again, shortages. This is going to have an adverse impact on all our pocketbooks.  Haven Herbs is also impacted and we have had to assess how to meet the need for affordable natural products and still stay afloat and support ourselves as a company and its workers.

Here is what we have decided/done happened so far:
1. We have had to do substitutions for our preferred packaging (so some items may not be as lovely on the outside as they are on the inside, for example).

2. Yes, we have had to find a way to increase prices or cut volume of product for the price. We do this reluctantly, as one of our missions is to keep prices affordable so that everyone can use natural products and stay well.

3. We are dedicated to packaging in more expensive glass, cardboard, and metal and not lessening our packaging costs to include plastic. Plastic leaches into your product, pollutes the environment, and we do not want to be a part of that. So we will not save money in this way.

4. We dream of having a farm again (goal is end of 2027), reducing the cost of materials by growing it ourselves.

Our most recent changes:
We recently polled customers in social media. We are stopping the tisane packaging in lovely tins moving forward- to use paper bags that are recyclable and compostable.

This may or may not be the last change we make for economic reasons. But we will always be transparent about the changes we make. And we will ask for your input, as you are why we do what we do!
